The County Government of Machakos, through the Department of Lands, has taken a decisive step toward transforming Matuu Town into a well-planned and sustainably developed urban center. Representing H.E. Governor Wavinya Ndeti, the Chief Officer for Lands, CPA Abdullahi Gulliye, led the County delegation in a three-day stakeholder workshop focused on the preparation of the Local Physical Land Use Development Plan (LPLUDP) for Matuu Town.
This strategic collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) aims to guide structured growth, proper land use, and coordinated development—laying the groundwork for long-term urban sustainability. The workshop brought together a wide range of partners, including the Matuu Ward MCA, officers from the Ministry of Lands, Public Works and Urban Development, the National Land Commission, FAO technical experts, planners, and surveyors. Their collective expertise underscores a shared commitment to shaping the future of Matuu.
Day 1 centered on aligning priorities and charting a roadmap for the planning process.
Day 2 began with a recap of key insights before participants broke into thematic working groups. These teams focused on the collection of both primary and secondary data across three core areas: Infrastructure and Transport, Governance, and Environment & Climate Change. Each group successfully developed comprehensive data collection tools, setting the stage for on-the-ground assessments.
Day 3 marked a significant milestone as the team conducted a detailed reconnaissance study in Matuu Town. During the visit, they paid a courtesy call to the Area MCA, Hon. Ndawa, a dedicated advocate for orderly and progressive land use. Planners and surveyors led site visits across different zones, collecting vital data to inform zoning decisions and future developments.
Through this collaboration, Matuu is steadily advancing toward Governor Wavinya Ndeti’s vision of elevating the town into a fully serviced municipality. The LPLUDP process not only strengthens urban planning structures but also ensures that future development is sustainable, people-centered, and aligned with Machakos County’s long-term growth agenda.
